Micro-spectroscopic characterization of environmental samples and ray tracing study to implement a submicron X-ray beam in ID21 beamline

The seminar will be dived in two parts; first, I will show the results of the project Micro-spectroscopic characterization of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs) in sludge from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) from Mexico. Nanoparticles are present in a broad range of products and industrial processes. However, their intrinsic novel properties represent also a challenge on understanding their fate and behaviour in the environment. This is the case of TiO2-NPs, since they are increasingly used in many commercial products (e.g. sunscreens, cosmetics, paints and plastics). It is important to determine their potential harmful effects they may have on ecosystems and health once released into the environment. Previous studies have shown that TiO2-NPs induce genotoxicity in cells. In addition, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) concluded that TiO2-NPs are potentially carcinogenic (respiratory exposure). An important environmental concern is their release into wastewaters, ending up in the sludge produced in WWTPs. With the increasing use of WWTPs sludge as amendment in agricultural soils, a depth characterization of TiO2-NPs in sludge samples is necessary for assessing potential environmental risks. Sludge samples, collected from WWTPs of Chihuahua State, Mexico, were analysed combining several X-ray based techniques, the Ti concentration and its speciation in function of the particle size has been obtained.

For the second part, Ray tracing study to implement a submicron X-ray beam in ID21 beamline, I will start with a brief introduction on the OASYS software, mainly by examples of XOPPY and the ray tracing package SHADOWOUI, followed by showing the results of a broad ray tracing study for the refurbishment of ID21 beamline. The implementation of a submicron X-ray beam in ID21, will provide their users with unique analytical capabilities, specially µXRF and µXANES techniques in the tender X-ray regions, 2D imaging information with sub-micrometric resolution.
